Age 87, of Turtle Creek, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2021. He was the son of Ida (Vitali) Versino and Mario Versino. Dedicated father to Bill (Helen) Versino of South Park, Joe Versino of East Pittsburgh, and Michelle Versino of Turtle Creek. Brother to Pete Versino and Jean Versino. Uncle to Jackie (John) Ruggeri, Joyce Versino, and Jan (Richard) Flaig. Grandfather to Victoria (Josh) Hans, Allison, Emily, and Ryan Versino, Kaitlyn Fey and David Seaman. Great-grandfather to Mia and Emma.
Mario graduated from Turtle Creek High School in 1952 and joined the US Navy during the Korean War and served until 1956. He went to Bainbridge, MD for boot camp and served at the San Diego Naval Station and Pensacola Navy Base. In October 1955 he served as an EN-5 on the USS Glacier ice breaker, the newest and largest, on the first of 14 Operation Deep Freeze Expeditions to the Antarctic. The ship departed from Boston and was the first to make her way through the frozen Bellingshausen Sea. In this and subsequent voyages the ship proved critical in establishing permanent American bases in the Antarctic.
After his Navy service he was employed in the construction industry from 1957 to 2006 working on heavy excavating and pipeline projects. He was proud of his accomplishments and enjoyed much of the construction work and Navy service.
